Today I changed all the light bulbs in my house. I am now using an "energy star" designed product. This means the product was designed and manufactured to cuts its energy consumption while preforming the same function.
Each 60 watt replacement bulb uses only 13 watts of energy at a savings of 47 watts per. I changed out three bulbs, thats a saving a 141 kw. And $111 over the life of the bulb. Cool thing the bulb last for upto 7years with an average life of 8000 hours. The average light bulb was designed to last 750 to 1000 hours. And that's 24 less light bulbs I buy over time!

jediwright says :
CFL's actually require less mercurary in their production than conventional incandescent lightbulbs...
"A June 2007 article calculated that the overall mercury emission by CFLs is less than the mercury released into the atmosphere by coal-fired power generation for series of equivalent incandescent lamps over the same period. Of course, not all electricity is coal-fire generated, but the mercury from spent CFLs in landfills is not released into air if the bulbs are transported in a way so that they don't break, and with proper disposal, will not be released into the subsurface or groundwater in the foreseeable future."
